Project Background & Challenges

As the designated provincial COVID-19 treatment center and a leader in complex clinical interventions (ECMO for COVID-19 recovery, stroke thrombectomy, integrative cancer therapy), Shenyang Sixth People’s Hospital required a comprehensive upgrade to its outdated and fragmented clock system to:

  • Ensure precise, synchronized timing across critical departments (OR, ER, ICU) for accurate emergency records and device coordination.

  • Simplify maintenance and monitoring of diverse legacy clocks that lacked remote management and caused slow fault response.

  • Improve electromagnetic interference resistance in sensitive areas such as radiology and ICU.

  • Provide scalable solutions to accommodate new buildings and future smart hospital integrations.

Solution

Shutai implemented a hospital-wide, integrated, high-precision time synchronization system covering 22 key zones, including outpatient, inpatient, surgical, and emergency departments.

Core Timing Layer:

  • WIP Time Server with rubidium atomic clock module supporting GPS/BeiDou dual-mode timing, achieving ±0.1 ms accuracy as the master time source.

  • Redundant hot-standby master clocks to guarantee 24/7 uninterrupted operation.

Terminal Display Layer:

  • Dual-sided clocks installed in corridors and lobbies, IP65-rated, featuring temperature and humidity display, visible up to 150 meters.

  • Single-sided digital clocks for ORs and pharmacies, ultra-thin, silent, millisecond-level synchronized.

  • High-performance GPS antennas mounted on rooftops with anti-interference and lightning protection to ensure signal stability even in adverse weather.

Intelligent Management Layer:

  • Centralized monitoring software managing over 200 terminals, providing real-time status, auto synchronization, fault alerts (device offline, battery issues), and historical logs.

  • Role-based access for maintenance teams to remotely control display content (e.g., surgery countdowns, emergency notices).


Implementation Highlights

  • Utilized existing hospital network infrastructure supplemented by POE modules, minimizing disruption to clinical operations.

  • Applied shielding and filtering solutions in high EMI areas like radiology and ICU, maintaining time errors within ±5 ms.

  • Delivered targeted training and comprehensive operation manuals, including contingency drills for network outages and local clock holdover.
